So I’m planning on selling my 2011 S4 this upcoming November. I love it, but it’s got 94K, is due for new brakes soon, and I’m not planning on keeping it past 100K.
That said, I came across what seems like the deal of the century.
Brand New 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia AWD Base - 8.8" Nav, sport package, cold weather package...stickers at $45,500 . It’s got most things standard, but lacks a sunroof and premium sound.
Test drove it, and it was nice. Only gripes being slight turbo lag, decent blind spots (I’m used to a blind spot monitor), and pretty mediocre seats. The seats are flat and lack support .
The numbers:
10K/24 Month lease
$4,000 Down (trade in after paying off my lien)
$285 per month (matches my current car payment - insurance is $300 cheaper per year)
Literally this will not cost me anything, other than registration fees.
I really like the car a lot - it’s not common and I love the exclusivity . Not considering financing - I don’t trust Alfa reliability or resale value. I only kee p cars 2 years, so this will work perfectly in terms of length . Only caveat is that I’m settling a bit. I don’t hate the white, but I don’t love it. I love my sunroof, and premium sound too, which are two things I’m losing.
I got a quote for a 2018 how I’d have it equipped (sport seats, sunroof, sound) , and a 24 Month term is more than double this 2017 .
The Question: Should I pull the trigger or not?

It’s an interesting math/motivation exercise.
Not counting insurance, it’s essentially $451/mo (assuming you’re not loosing anything on the trade) or $10,840 spread over 2 years with $4k of that as a lump at the top.
You should compare that to $6,840 spread over 2 years which is keeping your current car. I don’t know what you owe or what your interest rate is so financially, who knows but in one of these scenarios, you end up with a car and in the other, you end up looking for a new lease/loan.
I’m not a huge fan of leases but that’s me. I also have 3 cars and daily a 27 year old Miata despite probably making Gulia money - whatever that means , haha.
From an emotional perspective - find something that makes you happy. If you need our confirmation, you might be looking at the wrong car.

Look at it like this, since it’s a lease, when it breaks, you get to try a variety of Alfa Romeo loaner cars.
I would maybe see if there are any other 2017s at dealers within like 250 miles with equipment closer to what you want. With the same year you can probably get same incentives. That’s just like a day’s road trip if that.
But if this is the only deal like this in your area, not the worst crazy thing to do.
(I may be being biased by the Alfa Romeo dealer next door to my office. With the traffic here it makes sense to have the car worked on close to work. Score.)

$4k down? Ouch! Perhaps wait for the new Genesis G70 ? For that price you might get a RWD 3.3T I assume.
Also, I posted about used Jag XE35Ts for around $27K if you can look beyond the shortcomings.

I don’t lease, a nd I don’t finance my cars. So I’m not qualified to reply...
BUT YOU DID ASK
Two years seems a long time in an uncomfortable, base-trim sedan. You got rid of your Jeep because, among other things, how you didn't enjoy the ride...

Having owned a B8 S4 6MT for about 3 years, I’d keep it. Especially if you’re trading for something that you don’t absolutely love. And a lease to boot. Nah, I’d pass. You have an asset right now and it’s about as trouble free an Audi as you will find. And it’s a blast to drive. I’d still have mine if it weren’t for my bigger family and the fact I’ve been pining for the D3 S8s for many years. So I made the switch. But I really enjoyed my S4, and to trade it for less than you’re dream car, isn’t worth it.

That’s the problem though, it’s not free. He’s giving up a car that has value to get it, and at the end of tbr lease, he’s got nothing. I’m not a fan of leasing though, so I may be a bit biased.

Hard pass, rather buy one CPO/used as they depreciate like a bag of bricks in water, so much so they’re creeping below the 30k mark already; I’m also not a fan of leasing so that factors in

Teat drive the other cars in its class and decide for yourself.
I’ m far more partial to the A4 and the F30.
They aren’t uncommon or excclusive, but they are FAR better well rounded.
If you want something kinda unique, consider the Audi allroad or the 3 series wagon.
If I was the one making the decision, I would advise against the Alfa. There are better cars out there.

He’s giving up an out-of-warranty Audi with a lien on it. From that perspective, l easing the Giulia is pretty much a wash in terms of end value from a TCO perspective .

$4k down? Nope. But if you’re getting one, leasing short term seems like the only sem i intelligent way to get into one of those.

Oh yeah, I missed that part that he doesn’t own it outright. But still, to give up a reasonably reliable car for one of very questionable reliability, and not trimmed out like he would prefer, seems a bit impetuous to me. But to each their own. It’s not my money.

I’m not sure if an out-of-warranty Audi is any better than an in-warranty Giulia on the reliability front.
